Staff Bios

David Shields David Light Shields, Ph.D., founder and executive director of TrueCompetition.org, is also an associate professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Previously, he was codirector of the Mendelson Center for Sport, Character, and Community at the University of Notre Dame. In 2007, he was named a Sport Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport in conjunction with National Sportsmanship Day. Together with his wife, Brenda, he is the author of True Competition: A Guide to Pursuing Excellence in Sport and Society. They also co-authored Character Development and Physical Activity (Human Kinetics, 1995). In high school and college, David was a track and field athlete.
Brenda Light Bredemeier Brenda Light Bredemeier, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and a certified sport psychology consultant. Along with her husband, David, she was codirector of the Mendelson Center for Sport, Character, and Community at the University of Notre Dame. She was a founding board member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, a consultant for the NCAA, an editorial board member of several professional journals, and an academy member of American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
Christopher Funk Christopher Funk, is an associate director of TrueCompetition.Org. Previously, he was the director of finance and administration for the American Council on International Personnel in New York. He is an avid sport enthusiast, lettering in track and field at Williams College, with a particular passion for soccer, which he played for thirty years.
